Dementia Care

Living Well With Dementia at Home

Patricia, 81, Morecambe

The challenge

Patricia was diagnosed with early vascular dementia, and her husband Derek was frightened about the future.

What we provided

Horizons assigned two consistent carers, both trained in dementia care, who visited daily to support with personal care, meals, and structured activities.

The outcome

Patricia is calmer and more settled, with fewer incidents of distress.

The situation

Patricia was diagnosed with early vascular dementia, and her husband Derek was frightened about the future. He knew he could not manage alone, especially as Patricia's confusion and wandering increased. Their previous care provider offered generic support without understanding dementia, and Patricia became distressed during visits.

How we helped

Horizons assigned two consistent carers, both trained in dementia care, who visited daily to support with personal care, meals, and structured activities. They used reassuring communication techniques, maintained Patricia's routine, and built trust over time. Our team also provided Derek with practical guidance on managing challenging behaviours and offered respite care so he could attend his dementia support group.

The outcome

Patricia is calmer and more settled, with fewer incidents of distress. Derek says the consistency and expertise of our carers has transformed his experience of dementia care. Patricia still lives at home, where she's most comfortable, and Derek finally feels he's not managing this alone.

They don't treat her like she's got something wrong with her. They just help her have a good day, and that means everything to us.

Derek, Patricia's husband, Morecambe
