What is cancer care and support at home?

Cancer care at home is practical, personalised support for people living with cancer in their own home. For some people, that means help with day-to-day routines that have become harder to manage. For others, it means more involved support around comfort, mobility, medication, recovery after treatment, or changes in health and energy levels. The right support will look different from person to person. At Horizons Homecare, this service is not limited to one stage of illness. It can support someone during treatment, after treatment, while living with an ongoing condition, or when things have become more difficult at home. It is also not only for people at the end of life. Where that level of support is needed, we can also help with End of life care at home. Home care does not replace medical treatment. It works alongside it, helping people stay safe, comfortable and supported at home while reducing pressure on family members.

Care that changes with the person

One of the biggest realities of living with cancer is that needs can change quickly. A person may feel well enough to do most things for themselves at one stage, then need much more support after treatment, during a flare-up in symptoms, or as fatigue builds. Good home care should reflect that. It should not feel rigid or out of step with what the person is actually going through. Horizons Homecare provides support that can adapt with the person. The aim is to help maintain dignity, comfort, routine and independence where possible, while making sure there is the right level of support when life feels harder. Starting care earlier can also make a real difference. It gives carers time to understand the person, their routines, their preferences and what is normal for them. When carers know someone well, they are more likely to notice subtle changes and raise concerns sooner.

FAQs

Common questions

Is cancer care at home only for end of life care?+
No. Cancer care at home can be helpful at many different stages, including during treatment, after treatment, during recovery, or when daily life is becoming harder to manage. If someone does need palliative or later-stage support, we can also discuss End of life care at home.
What does day-to-day cancer support usually involve?+
It depends on the person. Support may include medication assistance, personal care, meal preparation, household help, companionship, mobility support, sitting services, or help getting to appointments. Some people need a little support several times a week, while others need a more involved package.
Will we see the same carers?+
Continuity is one of the things Horizons Homecare is known for. We aim to send the same carers where possible so the person receiving support can build trust and familiarity with their care team.
How quickly can care start?+
After the care assessment, we usually ask for a few days to arrange the package properly and introduce your care team. We can often move quickly where support is needed.
Can support change if needs change?+
Yes. Cancer can affect people differently from one week to the next, so care should be flexible. We can review and adapt support as needs change.
Can families still be involved?+
Absolutely. Home care is there to support the person and reduce pressure on family members, not push them out. Many families stay closely involved while relying on us for consistent day-to-day support.
Do you only help with care tasks?+
No. Practical support is important, but so is emotional wellbeing, routine and quality of life. Alongside Personal care services and Medication assistance at home, many people benefit from Companionship care at home, Home help services, and support with Trips, outings and appointments.
