Companionship

Ending Isolation With Daily Companionship

Arthur, 82, Lytham St Annes

The challenge

After his wife Joyce passed away, Arthur became withdrawn and lonely.

What we provided

Horizons arranged daily companionship visits with a carer who shared Arthur's interest in gardening and cricket.

The outcome

Arthur is noticeably brighter and more engaged.

The situation

After his wife Joyce passed away, Arthur became withdrawn and lonely. His daughter visited weekly, but he spent most days alone, gradually losing interest in activities he once loved. He was at risk of depression and felt his life had lost purpose. Although he was physically independent, the emotional isolation was deeply affecting his health.

How we helped

Horizons arranged daily companionship visits with a carer who shared Arthur's interest in gardening and cricket. Rather than just sitting with Arthur, the carer encouraged him to tend his garden, took him to the local cafe for tea, and helped him reconnect with the community. Over weeks, Arthur opened up and began looking forward to these visits.

The outcome

Arthur is noticeably brighter and more engaged. He has joined a local gardening club and started inviting neighbours over for tea. His daughter sees her father smiling again and says the companionship support has given her peace of mind that her dad is not struggling alone.

Having someone to chat with and do things with, it's made me feel alive again. I look forward to every visit.
